Slime today, fuel tomorrow

London Free Press -- The smokestacks at the St. Marys Cement plant could soon be converted into a green powerhouse thanks to a "slimy" solution.

A pilot project in the Perth County community funnels the carbon emissions directly from the stack into water tanks to create algae that is converted to biofuels.

The project is a partnership between St. Marys Cement and Toronto-based Pond Biofuels.

Steve Martin, chief executive of Pond Biofuels, said the cement-making process tends to produce high concentrations of carbon dioxide as well as other pollutants such as nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide.

He said about 5-8% of all global carbon dioxide emissions come from cement production.

jrsva: sadly, that's the mentality of most people. Not even mean spirited, but extremely inflexible.

If this does work out, it could help with both pollution and an alternative energy, win win

To jiml1 most technology moves slowly alternatives have to be refined and the problems etc worked out
an alternative for gasoline is not just going to be discovered overnight

and PS go away

“. . . in the meantime go away.”

My, what a cynical, mean-spirited response. Anything that removes CO2 from the air and creates fuel of any sort is an excellent innovation. Most likely it can be progressively improved to improve quality and lower costs.

Ah, don't you just love technology. Maybe there is a way to convert all the algae growing in the backyard pools of foreclosed homes into green energy.

Slime - good metaphor for the slimey greenies bedeviling us all.

Put them in the cement making process.

When they have something that is as good as gasoline and is priced equal to or less than gasoline, then come and talk to us, in the meantime go away.
