In the U.K. a lot of drivers have moved over to driving diesel engine cars for better economy.
Here is the car I drive in Scotland.

40 + mpg (US gallon size)
Ford Mondeo Estate (Station Wagon)
Engine 1.8 litre TDCI Diesel
0 - 60 > 12 secs
Top speed 125 mph

Location > Hamilton Scotland
Latest gas price today in Hamilton, Scotland = $6.06 / US Gallon size

There's a $3500 eco credit (instant rebate) on the diesel X5. That's like free fuel for a year (or two).

I noticed the various dealers of a certain make/model all over California have way too many diesel vehicles in stock that nobody wants to buy. The manufacturer's product manager definitely made a bad guess/forecast... or maybe they were trying to get their average MPG number up.

Yes. I drive 85 hiway miles each way to work with my 2012 Jetta 2.0 TDI Sportwagen and average 49mpg including city. Normally get over 600 miles to a tank. Shame that diesel fuel so much more expensive with easier refining process than gas.

Yes, I used to own both a diesel Rabbit sedan and a diesel Rabbit P/U. Being retired, the new diesel cars are way too expensive for me now. Will have to keep my '99 Dodge Diesel P/U @ 21-22 mpg.

I prefer gasoline because of the noise but I will never say never.

My next vehicle will be another diesel. Diesel is more efficient than gassers by definition. The newest diesels spew less toxic exhaust than gassers by design

Yes but Natural Gas powered is my preference.
Quote from article today, "Facing soaring gasoline prices in 2011 and more than 100 miles of daily driving for his job as a traveling nurse, Daniel Piekarek bought a used Honda Civic GX, the only commercially available natural gas vehicle in the U.S. at the time. “My costs went from $30 a day to $5 a day,” says Piekarek, who lives in Michigan (pays $1.50 a gallon).
Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors have begun to offer dual-fuel pickups in their lineups."

Diesel makes a lot more sense than the E85 vehicles they are selling.
The diesel cars now are designed for diesil, unlike the junk that GM turned out in the 1970's, which were gasoline engine blocks.
The GM diesel killed Olds. And GM's credibility was destroyed.

So, diesels make a lot of sense, and certainly get a lot more MPG, than gasoline and much more than E85.
To burn E85, they need to design a turbo engine, much like a diesel.

No diesel for me. There is no diesel vehicle that I've ever driven behind whose exhaust I would impose on other drivers.

You bet I would! I have a 1982 VW Rabbit Truck with a diesel and could get 50 MPG. Also own a large Dodge Ram diesel and have my eyes out constantly for a VW Jetta TDI. Until then it's my 97 Honda Civic at 32 MPG

I'm a diesel convert. I get far more smiles per gallon than a gasser. No going back to gassers for me. 650ftlbs of torque starting at 1000rpm is addicting.
